Eugène Ionesco

THE BALD SOPRANO

Ionesco learned astounding truisms from his English primer.

"The floor is below and the ceiling is above."
"There are seven days in a week."

He also was introduced to Mr. Smith and Mrs. Smith. In their dialogue, Mrs. Smith informs Mr. Smith that it is nine o'clock, they live in the suburbs of London, and that their name is Smith.

Ionesco was impressed by their recitations and decided to write play.

THE BALD SOPRANO

MRS. SMITH : There, it’s nine o’clock. We’ve drunk the soup, and eaten the fish and chips, and the English salad. The children have drunk English water. We’ve eaten well this evening. That’s because we live in the suburbs of London and because our name is Smith.
